In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

A Wordfrom the Editor Franciscan Studies was established for the publication of scholarly articles in Franciscan theology and philosophy as well as articles which bear a significant relationship to a better understanding of Franciscan theology, philosophy, history and/or spirituality. The Studies was established as a quarterly journal in 1941 and become an annual publication of The Franciscan Institute in 1963. The Franciscan Institute humbly acknowledges its failure in the past several years to publish this journal in a timely fashion. Volume 50 (1990) was published in 1992; Volume 51 (1991) in 1996; Volume 52 (1992) in 1996; Volume 53 (1993) in 1997; and Volune 54 (1994-1997) in 1997. We have the material for volumes 55 (1998) and 56 (1998). We are completing the editing process on both volumes at this time. With the publication of two volumes in 1998 and two more volumes in 1999, Franciscan Studies will then be up to date. We deeply regret the confusion and inconvenience this has caused for both authors and researchers. I assumed editorial responsibility for Franciscan Studies in 1996. I trust that the successful publication of four volumes in less than two years is a positive and hopeful measure of our commitment to the future publication of this journal in a consistent and timely manner. Sincerely, F. Edward Coughlin, OFM Editor ...
