Mobile payments have transformed the safety, economy, and livelihoods of millions of Kenyans. Launched by Safaricom (Kenya's main telecom operator) in March 2007, M-PESA is an SMS-based money transfer service—M for mobile, pesa for money in Swahili. By January 2010, 17,000 agents facilitated transfers for nine million users, some 40 percent of Kenyan adults.
