Request for Manuscripts: Future SHAW Volumes

The editorial board of SHAW: The Annual of Bernard Shaw Studies seeks article-length manuscripts for upcoming volumes.

SHAW 32 will be a theme issue devoted to “Shaw and the City,” with Desmond Harding as guest editor. SHAW 32 will provide a picture of Shaw’s engagement as dramatist, critic, and cultural commentator with the metropolis as a site of convergent artistic traditions and histories, as well as emerging cultural, political, and social boundaries. The editor welcomes contributions from a variety of perspectives that speak to Shaw’s diverse representations of urban modernity. SHAW 33 will be a general volume open to articles on any subject related to the life, times, and works of Bernard Shaw. Inquiries and manuscript submissions should be sent to Michel W. Pharand at michelpharand@yahoo.com or mailed to 29 Bishop Street, Kingston, Ontario K7M 3P5, Canada.

SHAW submissions may be sent as email attachments (in Microsoft Word) or in hardcopy (with an additional copy on disk). Be sure to indicate the format and program used on the disk copy, and include postage for return of materials (if desired). For guidance on style, please refer to recent SHAW volumes and to the Chicago Manual of Style.

50th Annual Shaw Festival Season Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada 7 April–30 November 2011

The 2011 Shaw Festival featured three plays by Bernard Shaw: Heartbreak House (25 May–7 October), directed by Christopher Newton; Candida (28 May–30 October), directed by Gina Wilkinson; and On the Rocks (8 July–8 October), directed by Joseph Zeigler. The playbill also included My Fair Lady (lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe), directed by Molly Smith, The Admirable Crichton (J. M. Barrie), Drama at Inish (Lennox Robinson), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Tennessee Williams), The President (Ferenc Molnár, adapted by Morwyn Brebner), Maria Severa (Paul Sportelli and Jay Turvey), Topdog/Underdog (Suzan-Lori Parks), and When the Rain Stops Falling (Andrew Bovell).

An extensively-illustrated commemorative book, Shaw Festival: The First 50 Years, written by ISS President L. W. Conolly and designed by Scott McKowen, Art Director of the Shaw Festival’s house programs, was published by Oxford University Press in May 2011.

For information about summer performances of Shaw plays by Michael Friend Productions, contact Sue Morgan at Sue.Morgan@nationaltrust.org.uk. The two plays staged in 2011 were Pygmalion (24–26 June) and “In Good King Charles’s Golden Days” (22–24 July).

ShawChicago Theater Company 2010–2011 Season

The Shaw plays performed during ShawChicago’s 2010–11 season were The Philanderer (6 February–1 March 2010), The Doctor’s Dilemma (17 April–10 May 2010), Candida (16 October–8 November 2010) and Arms and the Man (16 April–15 May 2011).

“Shaw Without Borders/Shaw sans frontières” The Fourth International Shaw Society Conference University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada 25–29 July 2011

Sponsored by the International Shaw Society and the University of Guelph, this conference addressed Shaw’s broad international interests as expressed in his novels, plays, prefaces, speeches, and travels; productions of Shaw’s plays in different countries and languages; “boundary-free” internet Shaw; and “copyright-free” Shaw (in Canada since 2000, and in most other countries from 2020).
