THE CONTRIBUTORS Janet dean has taught American literature at Columbia University and at the State University of New York, Stony Brook. She is currently completing a manuscript on gender and the frontier in the American imagination. Michael BOUGHN is the audior of H.D.: A Bibliography, 1905-1993 (University Press of Virginia, 1993), and three books of poems: Three Peculiar Odes, A little post-apocalyptic suite for RC with thanL·for the rhino, and Iterations of the Diagonal. He is currently working on a collection ofessays called Thinking Knowing. John bryant, professor of English at Hofstra University, is author of Melville and Repose (Oxford 1993) and current editor ofMelville Society Extracts. He is presently at work on a compositional history ofthe Typee Manuscript entitled The Fluid Text. John hilgart teaches at Duke University. His essay on Willa Cather's aesthetics and cultural politics is forthcoming in Studies in the American Novel. He is currently working on a study of early AfricanAmerican blues lyrics. o. alan weltzien is a Professor ofEnglish at Western Montana College ofThe University of Montana. He teaches courses in Montana and Western literature, among others, and currently has an article about Norman Maclean and historian Robert Utley coming out in Montana: The Magazine of Western History. Currently he is publishing an article on William Least Heat-Moon, and is writing the bsu Western Writers Series pamphlet on Rick Bass. Quentin Anderson is author of The Imperial Selfand Making Americans . He is J. C. Levi Professor in the Humanities Emeritus Columbia University. ...
