THE CONTRIBUTORS christopher looby has published essays on Franklin in EighteenthCentury Studies and American Quarterly. He is writing a book on the linguisticality of early American nationality, as well as essays on Richard Wright, nineteenth-century sensation fiction, and American masculinity. Gerald DOHERTY teaches literature and literary theory at the University of Turku, Turku, Finland. He has published many articles on modernist writers in such journals as Style, Criticism, and South Central Review. He is presently writing on the influence of modern theories of rhetoric on narrative forms. nina Schwartz has published articles on Hemingway and Conrad in Criticism and New Orleans Review, and has just completed a book entitled Dead Fathers: The Discourses of Modern Authority. Philip KUBERSKi is an Assistant Professor of English at Wake Forest University. His recent work has appeared in The Yak Review and Substance. Stephen tatum's recent publications include essays on Willa Cather and on the Banana Republic catalogs. He is completing a manuscript on the artist Frederic Remington's writings, and is beginning a booklength study of Native American fiction from the early twentieth century to the present. terry caesar has published travel pieces on China, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil, and is presently putting together a book-length collection on his travel writing as well as another book on the category of "abroad" in American travel writing from its beginings to the present. fred see's recent publications include a book, Desire and the Sign, and essays on Clemens and Howells. His work-in-progress, "Marginal Literature," is about frontiers in best-selling American texts. ...
