THE CONTRIBUTORS NEiLL MATHESON teaches American literature at the University of South Alabama. He has published articles in American Literature and diacritics, among other journals. He is working on a book on melancholia and sexuality in nineteenth-century American culture. Katherine adams is Assistant Professor of English at the University of Tulsa, where she teaches courses in nineteenth-century American and African American literature. She is currently working on a book which investigates the political meanings invested in representations of privacy in mid-nineteenth-century American literature. Melanie v. Dawson is a Visiting Assistant Professor of English at the College of William and Mary. She is the co-editor of The American i8gos: A Cultural Reader (Duke, 2000) and is completing a manuscript entitled Spectacles of Agency, which explores representations of home entertainment in relation to the rise of the nineteenthcentury middle class. Joseph MCNiCHOLAS earned his Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of Texas, Austin in 1999.
