Dag Hammarskjˆld (1905-1961) was second secretary-general of the United Nations in the years 1953-61. During this 50th anniversary of his death in an air crash while on a peacekeeping mission in the Congo, his legacy is being re-explored both in his native Sweden and worldwide. In this essay, a reconsideration of his posthumously published journal Markings, he is recognized as a rigorous Christian seeker, learning from (among others) Meister Eckhart in the spiritual dimension and Thomas ‡ Kempis in the dimensions of ethics and self-scrutiny. Markings is now somewhat forgotten. This essay is an act of memory and homage.
