In Memoriam: Amy M. Charles After a long illness, Amy M. Charles died on Sunday, March 24, 1 985. For the last months of her life, poor health kept her from her books, papers, and, much to her distress, her students. But, as her many friends know, nothing could keep her from her correspondence. Amy leaves many achievements behind, including of course work on George Herbert that will keep generations of students and scholars in her debt: her life of Herbert will not likely be superseded, and her devotion to this poet led directly to the founding of — less than the least of all her mercies — the George Herbert Journal, the Friends of Bemerton Society, and the ever-growing Special Collection of Herbert materials housed at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Library. But other, equally significant kindnesses came daily from Amy, often in the form of her characteristic long letters, scribbled or typed, sometimes scribbled and typed, offering full pages of hard-nosed advice, warm support, and shared enthusiasm. She will be sorely missed, but not forgotten. Donations in her name will be accepted by the Jackson Library at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and will be used to add to the Special Collection of Herbert materials. And one issue of Volume IX of the George Herbert Journal is planned as a memorial tribute to Amy. Anyone with suggestions regarding this issue or who wishes to contribute in any way is urged to contact the editor of the journal.
