(1909-) was a member of the Group Theatre from 1934-1936. He went on to direct some of the most significant work on the American stage, such as The Skin of Our Teeth (1942), A Streetcar Named Desire (1947), All My Sons (1947), and Death of a Salesman (1949). In 1947 he founded the Actors Studio with Lee Strasberg. As a film director, he won praise for films such as A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945) and Oscars for Gentleman's Agreement (1947) and On the Waterfront (1954). However, he is perhaps best remembered as the most visible member of the Hollywood elite who "named names" before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1952. In a controversial ceremony at the 1999 Academy Awards, Kazan was awarded an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement.
