REVIEW OF THE THIRTY-SECOND ANNUAL MEETING KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE Stephen S. Birdsall The Thirty-second Annual Meeting of the Southeastern Division of the Association of American Geographers was held November 20-22, 1978 at the Hyatt Regency, Knoxville, Tennessee. The host institution was the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with Robert G. Long serving as Local Arrangements Chairman. Stephen S. Birdsall was Program Chairman for the meeting. More than 350 persons registered for the meeting, exceeding the previous single meeting record set by the 1972 annual meeting. There were 61 papers presented by 78 authors. The second Workshop on Map Libraries was held immediately prior to the opening of the Southeastern Division meeting. The Division was welcomed at the Opening Session by Walter R. Herndon, Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University of Tennessee , Knoxville. Following the welcome, a special panel session was held on "Geographers in Non-Academic Positions." The program also included a Southern Studies Plenary Session and a panel on "New Directions in Migration Research." The honors luncheon banquet address was delivered by Melvin G. Marcus, President of the Association of American Geographers, on "Environmental Research at High Altitudes , Yukon, Canada." During the Business Meeting ( Division President James O. Wheeler , presiding), it was announced that in a mail ballot, Sanford H. Bederman had been elected President, Samuel T. Emory had been elected Treasurer, and James O. Wheeler had been elected Regional Councillor. The membership unanimously approved the recommendation of the Honors Committee (chaired by Thomas L. Bell) that Merle Meyers and Burke G. Vanderhill be made Honorary Life Members of the Division. Honors were also awarded to Kevin J. Laws and to Jonathan L. Freeman and William B. Lockhart for outstanding papers presented by graduate students. Melinda S. Meade, Charles M. Good, Dr. Birdsall is Associate Professor of Geography at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC 27514. He served as Vice-President and as Program Chairman of the Division during 1977. Vol. XVIII, No. 1 79 and Carl W. Spurlock were elected to the Honors Committee for 1978. Elected to the Nominating Committee for that year were Dorothy S. Mason, Jesse O. McKee, and John J. Winberry.
