About the Authors and Editors Harry L. Watson is Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His most recent publication is Liberty and Politics: The Politics ofjacksonian America. Watson is Co-Editor of Southern Cultures. John Shelton Reed is William Rand Kenan, Jr. Professor of Sociology, Director of the Institute for Research in Social Science, and Interim Director of the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of many books, including WhistlingDixie and My Tears Spoiled MyAim, and OtherReflections on Southern Culture. Reed is Co-Editor of Southern Cultures. Catherine W. Bishir is Architectural Survey Coordinator at the State Historic Preservation Office of the Division of Archives and History, North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. She is the author of North Carolina Architecture and a co-author oí Architects and Builders in North Carolina: A History of the Practice ofBuilding. Bishir is a lecturer at North Carolina State University in the Department of Architecture of the School of Design, and the president of the Vernacular Architecture Forum. Michael Montgomery is Professor of English at the University of South Carolina at Columbia. Montgomery authored Annotated Bibliography ofSouthern American English and Language Variety in the South: Perspectives in Black and White. Elizabeth Fox-Genovese is Professor of History at Emory University. She is the author of many publications, including Within the Plantation and Feminhm Without Illusions: A Critique ofIndividualism. Sherman A. James is Professor of Epidemiology and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. James is also a Research Scientist at the Institute for Social Research. James L. Leloudis is Assistant Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Leloudis co-authored Like a Family: The Making ofa Southern Cotton Mill World. Leloudis is Review Editor for Southern Cultures. David Moltke-Hansen is Director of the Southern Historical and Folklife Collections and Curator of Manuscripts at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Library.
