Southeastern Geographer Vol. 30, No. 1, May 90, pp. 74-75 REVIEW OF THE FORTY-FOURTH MEETING, CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA Karl B. Raitz The Forty-Fourth meeting of the Southeastern Division, Association of American Geographers, was a joint meeting with the East Lakes Division and was held in Charleston, West Virginia, November 19—21, at the Marriott Town Center Hotel. Hosts for the meeting were the College of Graduate Studies, Concord State College, Fairmont State College, Glenville State College, Marshall University, Ohio University, West Liberty State College, and West Virginia University. Howard G. Adkins and Nancy Bain co-chaired the Local Arrangements Committee. The official registration count was 341 (SEDAAG) and 63 (ELDAAG) for a total of 404. The program included two field trips and a walking tour of Charleston, a workshop for the Southeastern Map Librarians, and two scheduled meetings. The core of the meeting consisted of 96 papers which were organized into 23 sessions. Southeastern Division members presented 65 papers, the East Lakes members, 31. For the Southeast this represented an increase from the 57 papers presented at the Mobile meeting in 1988. Four sessions were dedicated to student honors papers. At the opening session on Sunday evening, Thomas L. Bell, President of the Southeastern Division, welcomed the group and introduced Frank J. Calzonetti who conducted a panel discussion entitled "Coal Mining in the Mountain State: Past, Present, and Future." Thomas Bell also presided at the Annual Business Meeting on Tuesday morning. President Bell announced that Charles F. Kovacik had been elected President, Lizbeth PyIe, Treasurer, and Neal G. Lineback, Councillor. Elected as State Representatives were Howard Johnson, Alabama; Janet Kodras, Florida; Al Petersen, Kentucky; L. Allan James, South Carolina; and Kenneth Martis, West Virginia. Robert Lloyd, John Florin, Frank Calzonetti, Ed Malecki, and Bobby Wilson were elected Dr. Raitz is Professor of Geography at the University of Kentucky in Lexington , KY 40506. He served as Vice President and Program Chairman of the Division during 1989. Vol. XXX, No. 1 75 to the Honors Committee, with Lloyd serving as chair and Florin as chair-elect. Howard Adkins will chair the nominating committee which also includes Ted Mealor and Kathleen Parker. The meeting concluded on Tuesday afternoon with the annual Honors Luncheon. Stephen S. Birdsall, who chaired the Honors Committee , announced that Kay R. S. Williams, University of Georgia, and Jennifer L. DeHart, Appalachian State University, had won the student honors awards for best papers. The 1989 Merle C. Prunty Scholarship was awarded to Elizabeth Lowell, University of Georgia. Birdsall also announced two additional awards: Edward Malecki received the Outstanding Research Award and Sam Hilliard, the Lifetime Achievement Award. Saul B. Cohen, President of the AAG, concluded the luncheon with an address entitled "The World Geopolitical System in Retrospect and Prospect." ...
