Alderman The Southeastern Division of the Association of American Geographers is committed to honoring notable faculty and students. For information on the criteria for the Division's awards, please refer to a recent SEDAAG newsletter or the Southeastern Geographer, Vol. 37, May 1997, pp. 109-1 10. The Honors Committee has the task of soliciting nominations for several special awards, evaluating these nominations , and selecting recipients for recognition at the annual meeting in November. The following honorées represent some of the best geographers the profession has to offer. LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD J. Dennis Lord University of North Carolina at Charlotte The most prestigious award given by the Southeastern Division is the Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes an individual who has excelled in research, teaching, and service. Members of the Honors Committee are proud to present the 2002 Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. J. Dennis Lord of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In a professorial career that stretches over 32 years, Dennis Lord has become an internationally recognized leader in applied geographical studies , specifically location analysis of retail trade, shopping center development, and banking. A product and student of the American South, he has advanced our understanding ofthe growing financial prominence ofurban areas in the region. His publication record includes 44 articles in refereed professional journals, nine chapters in books, four monographs, and a co-edited book. He has served as a referee over 100 times for professional journals and granting agencies. His applied research has gained a national reputation for his department. Dr. Lord is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has directed over 50 master internship projects, often arranging external funding for them. Many ofthese internships have led to employment opportunities for students. His students are spread throughout the field of applied retail geography, working for virtually every major consulting firm in the Charlotte area and in many major corporations with their own location and marketing divisions. In 1994, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte awarded him the NationsBank Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Dr. Alderman is an Assistant Professor of Geography in the Department of Geography, East Carolina University, Greenville, NC 27858. A year later, Dr. Lord received the University of North Carolina Board of Governor's Award for Teaching Excellence, a system-wide recognition. His dedication to mentoring extends beyond students to include other faculty. On this point, one of Dr. Lord's departmental colleagues wrote: "We all know his door is always open for advice on our research and teaching. He is the essence of the quiet scholar/mentor and never tires of the endless inquiries we all make about our own research and scholarship." The Lifetime Achievement Award honors an individual who has supported geography through formal service to professional organizations or work in the public domain. Dennis Lord has made outstanding achievements in both arenas. He has served as editor of the Professional Geographer (1992-1994) and the Southeastern Geographer (1983-1987). Dr. Lord has held numerous leadership positions in the Association of American Geographers (Regional Councilor and Local Arrangements Committee), SEDAAG (State Representative, Secretary, Newsletter Editor, and Chair of Nominations Committee), and Applied Geography Conference (President and Chair of Local Arrangements). On more than 30 occasions, he has lent his expertise as an economic geographer to public officials and organizations, including school systems, libraries, police departments, and chambers of commerce in the Charlotte area. In 1 994, our regional division honored him with the Outstanding Service Award. When bestowing this award eight years ago, Tyrel Moore described Dr. Lord as a model of unselfishness, dependability, and professionalism. With this in mind, it is only fitting that our organization says "thank you" for a lifetime of achievement and excellence. RESEARCH HONORS AWARD Chor-Pang (CP.)
