Abstract

A decade ago, China Central Television (CCTV) launched a twenty-four-hour English-language news channel called CCTV English. The channel, which is funded by the Chinese government and reports to the Communist Party of China (CPC), has tried unsuccessfully to compete with international news outlets such as CNN and BBC. CCTV English has not attracted a sizeable audience over the past ten years due to poor production values, staid news presentation, and viewer skepticism about the channel's objectivity.
