About the Authors and Editors Peter A. Coclanis is associate professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Among his recent publications is The Shadow of a Dream: Economic Life and Death in the South Carolina Low Country, 1670-1920. John M. Coski is the director of The Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia. James Forman Jr. is a graduate of Yale Law School, and now works as a public defender in Washington, D.C. John Shelton Reed is William Rand Kenan Jr. Professor of Sociology and director of the Institute for Research in Social Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His most recent book is Surveying the South: Studies in Regional Sociology (reviewed in this issue). He is also coeditor of Southern Cultures. Richard D. Starnes is a lecturer of history at Western Carolina University and a doctoral student in American history at Auburn University. Kevin Thornton is an independent scholar from Midland, Michigan. Harry Watson is professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His most recent publication is Liberty and Politics: The Politics ofjacksonian America.
