About the Contributors & Editors Stephen W. Berry is a doctoral student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His dissertation explores the relationships between men and women, imagination and empire, in the South just before the Civil War. Gavin James Campbell, music editor for Southern Cultures, is a doctoral student in history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His dissertation topic is Adanta's musical life in the early twentieth century. Eugene D. Genovese, the husband of Elizabeth Fox-Genovese, is a poor SicilianAmerican boy from Brooklyn and a historian of sorts in his own right. Andrea Meryl Kirshenbaum is currently a student at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and plans to practice employment discrimination law. Her current research focuses on the sexual and racial harassment African American women face in the workplace . She holds a master's degree in history from the University of Pennsylvania and graduated with honors in history from Duke University. James L. LelOUdis is associate professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Leloudis is coauthor of Uke a Family: The Making ofa Southern Cotton Mill World and author of Schooling the New South: Pedagogy, Self, and Society in North Carolina , 1880—1920. He is coeditor for reviews for Southern Cultures. Jerry Leath Mills served from 196; until his retirement in 1997 on the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was professor of English, editor oí Studies in Philology, and an associate editor of The Southern LiteraryJournal. He is currendy visiting professor of English at East Carolina University and coeditor for reviews for Southern Cultures. John Shelton Reed is William Rand KenanJr. Professor of Sociology and director of the Institute for Research in Social Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Among his recent books is 1001 Things Everyone Should KnowAbout the South, written with Dale Volberg Reed. He is coeditor of Southern Cultures. George G. Stewart is a reference librarian and archivist at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, and was educated at Tulane University and the University of Denver. Stewart has taught courses on William Faulkner and on southern culture. His photographic study in this issue is part of a portfolio about Faulkner's world that he hopes to publish as a book. Harry L.
