CONTRIBUTORS TO THIS ISSUE Jeffrey N. Lash is a member of the Archival Projects Branch in the Office ofthe National Archives, at the National Archives, Washington , D.C. He is currently completing a study ofJoseph E. Johnston and the Confederate railroads, 1861-1865. Mark J. Stegmaier is professor of history at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, and is presently completing research for a book on the Compromise of 1850. Wendy F. Hamand is associate professor of history at Eastern Illinois University, Charleston. Her article on Harriet Beecher Stowe was recently published in the New England Quarterly. Christopher R.
