3. According to the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, p. 371, the U.S. bark Ethan Allen was 556 tons, 153´6˝ in length, 35´1˝ breadth, cpl. 90 and carried 6-32 pounders. From Oct. 27, 1861, to March 30, 1863, it patrolled the Gulf Coast under Actg. Vol. Lieut. W. B. Eaton, during which time it captured eight prizes and destroyed extensive salt works on the Florida coast. Returing to Boston for repairs, it cruised the New England coast from June 22 to Oct. 28, 1863, protecting coastal shipping and fishing vessels from Confederate raiders. It then joined the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron and patrolled the Carolina coast for the remainder of the war. During that time it was generally commanded by Actg. Master I. A. Pennell and, according to the Dictionary, "for several months served as a practice ship for junior officers of her squadron."
