Papa followed by two oblique strokes, as if Lope intended a change of speaker (cf. my note to v. 276, above); the space between the strokes has been filled in with Lope's curling deletion. 341. One letter deleted before Estrellas . Lope seems to have written I (for leyes, as in v. 342?), and tried to turn it into an e, followed by s; he then deleted this e, wrote a capital E through the s, and completed Estrellas. 836. Lope first wrote aberguenza, then changed the final a to e. 897. One or two letters deleted after en. 1130. q[ue] written through a d (the start of dia?). 1148. One letter deleted after ve (possibly a). 1376. One letter (i?) deleted after the first t of entendimiento. 1564. Lope started to indicate the speaker by writing C, then drew an oblique line through this, angled it to the right for his usual underline, and wrote Ju". 1708. The s of polios was added later (probably, but not unquestionably , by Lope). 1711. The d of dios appears written through a C. 1810. One letter deleted after vn; Lope obviously wrote vna. 1816. Lope wrote fui, then changed i to e. 2126. The e of goze is heavily retouched ; Lope seems first to have written goza. 2325. que, unabbreviated, is formed from m (no doubt for me). 2370. The g of girasol appears to have been formed from a y. 2463. Lope wrote vna, then formed the g of golpe from the a. 2485. A brief deletion immediately after Español; Lope may have written Españoles. 2515. Lope first followed en by tu, then changed the ? to o for toda. 2542. One letter (a?) deleted befor Ie; Lope apparently began q no al[canzé], then decided to turn the al into Ie. 2582. The d of do[rotea] seems to have begun as an I, as if Lope in a momentary lapse had started to write leo\nora\. 2688. tu written through la. 2705. One letter, probably an involuntary n, deleted after oraçio. 2717. One letter, unidentifiable, deleted after Serna. It might be remarked that a gante is written noticeably larger than the rest of the line, indicating that Lope had paused after partida; it was doubtless at this point that he made the change in v. 2714. 2780. The first a of aqsta written through an e, the start of esta. 2788. y formed from some other letter or letters. 2801. One letter deleted after the q of Inquisición. In addition, the italicized letters in the following words have been retouched ; the corrections seem merely to rectify slips of the pen, rather than representing any changes in Lope's intentions : milagros 705, sustituye 767, rescatad 956, Bernardino 1066, mantendr éis 2327, colonbino 2351. Another interesting feature of a Lope autograph is the markings placed on it by the unknown stage managers, actors, or printers through whose hands it passed. These markings fall into two general categories — marginal jottings and textual changes. The significance of the former is not always apparent, and it may be for this reason that R has ignored a few such signs in the notes to his edition. Perhaps if attention is called to them, someone else may find meaning in them. 260-268. Two parallel lines in fine ink run diagonally through part of this passage, beginning well to the left of v. 260 and ending about the middle of v. 268. 293. Just to the left of this verse are two horizontal bars, the upper one wavy; they apparently call attention to the beginning of a new stanza, as Lope did not mark it by capitalizing tanbien (see R's note to w. 277-340). 373. In faint ink to the left of cam: Si. (?), and above the S two more letters (rap). 475-479. The "doodling" referred to in R's note is dicese, which has been crossed out.
