According to Beatrice, January is being unwintered "because of the hundredth part that is neglected below." The seasonal slippage to which she refers is not, as is generally supposed, due to the Julian calendar, but rather to the precession of the equinoxes, which significantly is also the reason for postulating the existence of an eighth sphere, the Primum Mobile, where this speech occurs.
