LightT. Cummins, Bryan Professor ofHistoryand Director ofthe Center for Southwestern and Mexican Studies at Austin College in Sherman, was sworn in as the new Texas State Historian in Austin on May 26 by Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst. Cummins was appointed to the position on May 1 2 by Governor Rick Perry and will serve for two years. Dr. Cummins was recommended to the post by both the Texas Historical Commission and the Texas State Historical Association. He received his doctorate from Tulane University, and he is a board member ofthe TSHA and an associate of the Danforth Foundation. He is also past chair of the Grayson County Historical Commission and a member of Humanities Texas. Also making remarks at the ceremony were Larry McNeill, a former President of the TexasStateHistoricalAssociation, Dr. Frank delaTeja, outgoingTexas State Historian, and State Representative Larry Phillips.John Crain, a commissioner of the Texas Historical Commission and a former president of the Texas State Historical Association, served as master of ceremonies. Kent Calder and Steve Cure represented the Texas State Historical Association. "I am deeply honored by this appointment," said Dr. Cummins. "It has been my good fortune to have taught many students who have had a marked interest in Texas history over my thirty-one years on the faculty at Austin College, many of whom have graduated to distinguish themselves in a wide variety of careers by which they have advanced Texas and the Southwest." (Frank) de la Teja of Texas State University-San Marcos, where he is Professor and Chair of the History Department, also received a new honor in May. On May 23, Dr. De la Teja was awarded the Medalla de Acero al Mérito Histórico, Capitán Alonso de León, en el Ámbito Internacional (Captain Alonso de León Medal for Historical Merit, International Category) by the Sociedad Nuevoleonesa de Historia, Geografía y Estadística (Historical , Geographical, and Statistical Society of Nuevo León). The medal is given in three categories each year to individuals at the international, national, and local levels who have made significant contributions to the study of Mexican history. The award was presented at a ceremony in Monterrey , Nuevo León, marking the sixty-seventh anniversary ofthe Sociedad Nuevoleonesa de Historia, Geografía y Estadística. Dr. De la Teja is also a past president of the Texas State Historical Association.
