Formulaic and Thematic Allusions in Iliad 9 and Odyssey 14

This article argues that the embassy scene in Iliad 9 and the hospitality scene of Odyssey 14 (Odysseus in the hut of the swineherd) make meaningful allusions to each other. Through the use of repeated formulas and shared themes, the two episodes reframe each other, and highlight the competing views of heroism offered by the Iliadic and Odyssean traditions.
