Joseph Fletcher’s 1981 remarks on the Manchu language led to a new scholarly stage in the Qing studies: “A Qing scholar who wants to do first-class work in the archives must, from now on, learn Manchu and routinely compare the Manchu and Chinese sources for their topics of research.”1 Along with the U.S. development in this direction,2 academics in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in the field of Manchu language have also promoted the same value to this seriously endangered language. During the past twenty to thirty years, their accomplishments have upgraded the study of the Manchu language along two tracks: the historical Manchu in close association with the Qing studies and the contemporary spoken Manchu for linguistic research. Their achievements can, if used suitably, help enrich U.S. Qing studies and Manchu studies by assisting or advancing Manchu language teaching, learning, and research, especially to those who attempt to employ Manchu and Chinese to develop scholarship. Sixteen representative publications have been selected for this review, dating from 1983 to 2006.
