In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

exciting new developments in genetics which are contributing to a better understanding of the group at molecular level. In contrast, a considerable amount of space (one-third of the book, to be exact) is devoted to the details of the author's classification of actinomycetes which is, with the exception ofthe Russian literature, generally accepted. The material ofthis portion ofthe book is a condensed version ofthe second volume ofthe author's earlier monograph on The Actinomycetes (1961) from which one-halfofthe microphotographs were also reprinted. The rest of the book deals with physiological and pathogenic properties, phages as well as biochemical activities, which includes the production ofvitamins, pigments, odors, enzymes, and antibiotics. Throughout the book, typographical errors were noted only occasionally, but consistency has not been maintained in the literature references. They were frequently cited without the year of their printing, alluded to more than one publication (Ebringer, p. 202), or were omitted in the Selected Bibliography (Wollenweber, p. 233). In order to project the dynamics and the potential ofthis group, it is felt that the text should have included more ofthe material dealing with enzymatic, biosynthetic, genetic, and molecular aspects ofthese microorganisms. On the balance, however, the book should fulfil the author's objective, namely, to find a place in advanced courses in microbiology. In most college curricula, actinomycetes are still aneglected group and are treated superficially. This is in spite oftheir tremendous importance in soil ecology, as producers of antibiotics and other metabolically active products, or as convenient materials for various biological investigations. To achieve the author's objective, therefore, would be most fortunate and desirable. Oldrich K. Coon." We are happy that the word "late" is an error, sorry that we made the error and then overlooked it in editing. Ralph M. Dreger Author DwightJ.
