PERSPECTIVES IN BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE Volume 19 · Number 3 · Spring 1976 EDITORIAL: PERSPECTIVES WRITING AWARD WINNER Dr. Lloyd Allan Wells, a resident at the Mayo Foundation, Rochester, Minnesota , is the winner of the first Perspectives Writing Award for young writers. Dr. Wells at 27 has both a Ph.D. in anatomy and an M.D. degree from the University of Rochester. He received the Osier Medal of the American Association for the History of Medicine in 1969 and addressed the American Philosophical Society in 1973 on the relationship between John Hunter and Edward Jenner. Dr. Wells has written three plays, two of which have been performed—a further testimony to his stated avocation of writing and hobby of medical history. It gives us great pleasure to present "The Intractability of One Man: Hunterian Controversies" as the first essay in this issue and to congratulate Dr. Wells, whose manuscript was in competition with 33 submitted by authors from five nations. The following number ofPBM will cite "honorable mention" authors and the titles of their papers as well as list the other manuscripts entered in this contest and judged acceptable by our editorial board. These will be published as space permits. A second contest will be announced in the near future. R.L.L. Perspectives in Biology and Medicine · Spring 1976 | 303 ...
