Abstract

Recent popular memoirs by Dave Eggers (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius), Augusten Burroughs (Running With Scissors), and others have created a wider public participation in creative writing programs and workshops ostensibly designed to provide a cathartic self-expressive medium for adults to process traumatic childhood memories and even the ongoing maladaptive thought or behavioral patterns consequent to unresolved developmental conflicts, a task hitherto considered more appropriately the provenance of psychiatry and psychotherapy.
