Editorial: Co-winners of the First Dwight J. Ingle Memorial Writing Award

PERSPECTIVES IN BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE Volume 25 ¦ Number 1 ¦ Autumn 1981 EDITORIAL: CO-WINNERS OF THE FIRST DWIGHTJ. INGLE MEMORIAL WRITING AWARD Authors Peter G. H. Clarke and Jane M. Orient are the co-winners of the first Dwight J. Ingle Memorial Writing Award for writers no more than 35 years of age. The responses of persons younger than most Perspectives contributors have been rewarding. Twenty-two contestants—students, academicians, and practicing physicians from the United States, India, and Switzerland—participated. In addition to the two winning essays appearing here, six others will be published in subsequent issues. In acknowledging this award, Clarke writes, "Your competition appealed to the competitive side of me, and stimulated me to think through some theoretical issues that would otherwise have been left aside because of the pressures of practical science." As we complete the twenty-fourth year oíPerspectives it is important to note that this dream of Dwight Ingle, founder and first editor ofPBM, has come ofage. Our gaining contributions and adherents from younger biomedical scholars supports Dwight's conviction that there is indeed a need in biology and medicine for ajournai that attempts to put things together.
