QUAKER BIOGRAPHIES93 and the neighbouring Governments. It urges the importance of a good education, not a cheap one. It recommends that instead of one teacher who boards about in families and looks for a better post, a more substantial equipment be established "on a lasting bottom" with an endowment and managing committee. It ends with nine definite suggestions for the method and scope of instruction, six rules extracted from those used in Philadelphia schools, and five advices for children at home. Benezet's interest in this subject of country Quaker schools appears as early in his life as 1750 (A. C. Myers, Hannah Logan's Courtship , p. 293). Evans, American Bibliography, No. 15739, dates the pamphlet as 1778. In fact all these three are recognized as Benezet's by Evans. But neither Smith nor later Benezet bibliographies that I have seen mention them. Almost identical in wording with large parts of the last mentioned pamphlet is an official Philadelphia Yearly Meeting broadside of 1778 entitled "Some Observations Relating to the Establishment of Schools." Beside the signature of the Yearly Meeting Clerk there appear the signatures of Anthony Benezet and Isaac Zane on behalf of the committee that proposed it. The phraseology is almost certainly that of Benezet, but whether its date is earlier or later than the pamphlet I cannot tell. This is duly cataloged by Smith (i. 762) under "Philadelphia Yearly Meeting." Cf. Evans, No. 15802. The copy that I have consulted is one I came upon in Pemberton Papers, vol. 32, p. 106, at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. QUAKERS IN THE DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY By Anna B.
