hesitated to give his time to those who needed him. He was especially considerate of beginners; his criticism was invariably just and penetrating, his advice sound, his encouragement sincere and his friendship unwavering . Professor Anibal was busy up to the last moment trying to bring to conclusion numerous studies which had kept him occupied for many years. The projects left in varying degrees of incompleteness are critical editions of Fuenteovejuna (his life's work), Mira's La casa del lahur, Mira's Cuatro milagros de amor and La ventura de la fea, which he believed also to be by Mira; a study of the bibliographical problem posed by the Dozena Parte of Lope's plays; observations on punctuation in Lope's autograph plays; a study on emblem literature; and an edition of Tirso's trilogy La Santa Juana (in collaboration with Gerald Wade). Because of his enthusiasm and relentless dedication to the comedia his death will be an irreparable loss to the readers of this Bulletin. Ramon Rozzell and Frank Piatt Ohio State University will adjourn to the Piccadilly Restaurant, 406 Fine Arts Bldg., 410 S. Michigan Avenue , for our luncheon from 12:30 to 2:00. Comediantes de Convene In Chicago December 27 The annual meeting of the Comediantes will be held on Tuesday, December 27, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (For information concerning the place, see the official announcement .) The chairman, Darnell Roaten, and Charles Adams will present respectively very brief papers on the structural forms of Alarcon's Las paredes oyen and La verdad sospechosa. Since Mr. Roaten and Mr. Adams have not consulted with each other in the preparation of these essays, each will presumably represent an independent approach to the problems of structure in the comedia. After these papers the meeting will be open to discussion. Immediately following the meeting, we Early Editions of Lope's Works Sold Bruce W. Wardropper reports an interesting item from the LONDON TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT, August 26, 1955, p. 500, "A run of twenty-three first or early editions of the works of Lope de Vega made a total of £429." The reference is to an auction sale at Sotheby's, London on July 6 of books belonging to Count A. Oberndorff . The buyer's name was not given. Finea in Lope's La Dama Bobo in the Light of Modern Psychology Joseph E. Fucilla, Northwestern University In the first act of Lope's La Dama Boba Finea, the protagonist appears as a woeful nonny. Later, thanks to the devotion of her suitor Laurencio, she blossoms under his tutorship into quite an intelligent and keenwitted young lady. Lope was, of course, primarily interested in the humor that could be extracted from such a contrast and hence presents us with an intentionally distorted picture of her. Nevertheless, at the same time the characterization which we are given of Finea furnishes us with a psycholgical case history that is worth considering per se. That the stupidity which she exhibits in the beginning is not congenital is made clear by the brightness she evidences subsequently. This being so, it is necessary to look for a motivating explanation for her behaviour. It happens to be provided by Lope himself in the person of her sister Nise. The latter's clevereness, refinement and high degree of culture has made her the center of attraction , a situation which places Finea in a 22 ...
