1. It is of interest to recall that Haldane [7] invented the first mapping function and the unit cM, or centimorgan, for the purpose of chromosome mapping.

3. Manchukuo is a former country which was comprised of Manchuria and Rehe Province of China. The Japanese invaded Manchuria in 1931 and created Manchukuo in 1932. Of the major countries, only Japan, Italy, and Germany extended diplomatic recognition. After World War II, Chinese sovereignty was reasserted over the area.

4. In his later years, Darlington became an extreme hereditarian and broke ranks with Haldane.

5. It is not clear to which meeting Haldane was referring. Both Haldane and Darlington had participated in the Sixth International Genetical Congress, which had just been held in 1932 in Ithaca, New York. The Seventh International Genetical Congress was held in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1939. Both...
