32 BULLETIN OF FRIENDS' HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION NOTES AND QUERIES An interesting book, usually listed as Anti-Quakeriana, is that by Ephraim Pagitt (or Paget), entitled Heresiography; or, A description of the Hereticks and Sectaries of these latter times. The first edition was published in London in 1645, and hence was too early to contain a direct reference to Friends. In the fifth edition of 1654, however, there is added a dissertation on "The Quakers or Shakers, and the Ranters." The sixth edition of 1661 contains a portrait of James Nayler, with the letter " B " on his forehead, and the following lines underneath: " Of all the Sects that Night and Errors own, And with false Lights possesse the World, ther's none More strongly blind, or who more madly place, The light of Nature for the light of Grace." " If a warm stove and one person sitting by it the usual length of time . . . can be called a meeting, those of Schuylkill have all been held. That condition of the matter occurred occasionally; we wish to attend the preparative meeting."—This extract is taken from a letter of 4 mo. 1, 1882, written by Elijah F. Pennypacker, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, to Mary Phillips Thomas, King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Elijah Pennypacker was probably the faithful Friend by the stove, as he was also, at an earlier time, one of the important station-masters of the " underground railway " in his part of Pennsylvania (near Phoenixville). Many Friends are familiar with Some Memoirs of John Roberts, written by his son, Daniel. The choice little volume was first published in 1746, and since then has been reprinted more than a score of times. The present writer has just read some lines of the book worth passing along. The Bishop was questioning John Roberts in Court about his children, and wanted to know how many of them had been "bishoped" (confirmed). John Roberts: "None that I know of." Bishop: "What Reason can you give for that? " John: "A very good one, I think. Most of my children were born in Oliver's days, when Bishops were out of fashion." ["At this the Court fell a laughing."] In the same Court a man named Cuthbert flew into a rage at some of John Roberts' answers to questions and cried out: "If all the Quakers in England are not hanged in a month's time, I'll be hanged for 'em." At which John answered: "Prithee, Friend, remember and be as good as thy word." One can readily understand why Oliver Wendell Holmes said of this book of memoirs: "Good as gold, every word of it." NOTES AND QUERIES33 Christian Lous Lange is a great Norwegian scholar, a well known student of the international peace movement, and a recipient in 1921 of the Nobel Peace Prize. In a study entitled "Histoire de la doctrine pacifique" he gives considerable space to the contribution of the Society of Friends to the peace movement. He quotes the writings of George Fox and Robert Barclay to show the fundamental basis of the Quaker peace testimony. He pays tribute to the work of William Penn, mentioning the peace policy carried out with the Indians of Pennsylvania, and also Penn's great project for the peace of Europe. He also emphasizes the proposal by John Bellers in 1710 for the confederation of Europe. His comparison of the plans of Penn and Bellers may be of interest to some: " Il est aussi intéressant de voir que l'économiste J. Bellers étaie son raisonnement d'arguments d'ordre économique, aspect qui avait été complètement négligé par W. Penn. Par là il s'apparente à son prédécesseur français Émeric Crucé." (p. 282.) Lange's essay is published in Recueil des Cours, 1926, III. Académie de Droit International. Paris. 1927. In reply to recent inquiries, the Editor desires to refer to the following biographical sketches that appeared in the Journal of Friends Historical Society (London), concerning three great Quaker bibliographers: John Whiting (16561722 ), Vol. 4, pp. 7-16; Morris Birkbeck (1734-1816), Vol. 8, pp. 9-15; Joseph Smith (1819-1896), Vol. 11, pp. 1-10. The attention of the Editor has been...
