[End Page 108]

  • Another Song
  • Ángel Escobar (bio)
    Translated by Kristin Dykstra (bio)

I love you because you've managed to bea little less ugly than this era.Because your rationality messes me up.When you whimper because my intervening hooves stomp on youI know you've been just a little more beautiful than History. That we've sought each other out like sorrowful turtlesand find each other in this grimy cityand love each other through this particular dust and music. And further I know that when we kisstoday's world drops to its knees. The tired wind descends from the scaffoldsand tosses the day's papers into flight. From the poems about a badly chosen Godto the route assignment for the very last driver.Furthermore I love you because I love you.Because you never becomeas ugly or distant as a ceremony.Because I can still touch your chintug at your eyes get you to bury themin my paltry heartache—. And give mine over to youwithout contracting for their replacement. [End Page 109]
