Ángel Escobar was born in Cuba's eastern agricultural province of Guantánamo in 1957. Although his family was impoverished, Escobar went on to earn two degrees in theater arts, and his 1978 poetry collection Viejas palabras de uso won a national prize for emerging writers. Escobar eventually authored numerous other books of poetry: Epílogo famoso (1985), Allegro de sonata (1987), La vía pública (1987), Malos pasos (1991), Todavía (1991), Abuso de confianza (1992), Cuando salí de La Habana (1996), El examen no ha terminado (1997), and La sombra del decir (1997). Escobar's reputation has been growing since his death in Havana in 1997, and the Cuban publisher UNIÓN reprinted his complete works of poetry in 2006.
