Andan cerca de mí: sólo un momentoantes que el corazón, casi a mi lado.Han nacido conmigo, a mi cuidado;se mueven al sudeste de mi aliento.
Cada vez que hablo os digo que las sientohablar en mi favor. Acostumbradome tienen a su peso, a su cansadomodo de repartirse por el viento.
Yo las quiero. Me sirven bien. Y os juroque han querido tocar hasta el misterioy el techo del amor, a todo trance.

Only a moment ahead of my heart,they stay close by my side and understand.Born with me, they're always at my command.Southwest of my breath they never depart.
When I speak believe me I feel their artspeaking on my behalf. When they demandrest I always respond, and in their plannedmovements among the winds I take part.
I love them. They serve me well. And I swearthey've even tried to fathom the mysteryand the limits of love at whatever cost.

Manuel Alcántara, born in Malaga in 1928, is a poet and newspaper columnist. Among his books are Manera de silencio, El embarcadero, Plaza Mayor, Ciudad de entonces, Anochecer privado, Sur, paredón y después, Este verano en Malaga, and Travesía (Antología poética, 1955-2004). His newspaper columns have been published in four collections: Los otros días, Fondo perdido, Vuelta de hoja, and Málaga nuestra. As a poet he has been distinguished with the National Literature Prize, among other awards. As a columnist he has received the three principal awards of Spanish journalism: the Luca de Tena Prize, the Mariano de Cavia Prize and the César González-Ruano Prize He has been awarded an honorary degree from the Universidad de Málaga, is a Favorite Son of Malaga, and has received the Medal of Andalusia.

Manuel Alcántara nació en Málaga en 1928. Es poeta y articulista en distintos medios de comunicación. Entre sus libros de poesía están Manera de silencio, El embarcadero, Plaza Mayor, Ciudad de entonces, Anochecer privado, Sur, paredón y después, Este verano en Málaga y Travesía (Antología poética, 1955-2004). Hasta el momento se han publicado cuatro recopilaciones de sus artículos periodísticos: Los otros días, Fondo perdido, Vuelta de hoja y Málaga nuestra. Como poeta ha sido distinguido con el Premio Nacional de Literatura, entre otros galardones. Como articulista ha recibido los tres máximos reconocimientos del periodismo español: el Premio Luca de Tena, el Premio Mariano de Cavia y el Premio César González-Ruano. Es Doctor Honoris Causa por la Universidad de Málaga, Hijo predilecto de Málaga y Medalla de Andalucía.
