El tiempo es un camino para andarme.(No te engañes. Morir, ay, para ver. Tequedarás solo, a solas con tu suerte).Yo me he echado a dormir para vengarme.
Porque sé que no debo entusiasmarmecon cosas que se acaban en la muerte,estoy soñando. Cuando me despierte,no sé si habré hecho bien en despertarme.
El tiempo, con su escaso presupuesto,se nos va a cada paso, mientras ardecomo una rama seca todo esto.
Siempre un reloj aprieta, nos ahoga,nos coge por el cuello un día y tardeo temprano nos cuelga de una soga. [End Page 52]

Time is a path to walk, but often steep.(When you die you will see. Don't fool yourself.You will be alone, you and fate itself.)Revenge is mine when I lay down to sleep.
Because I know so well I should not leapor dance with that which ends in death itself:I'm just dreaming and when I wake myself,I will not know if I should smile or weep.
Miserly time, with its exacting measure,flees from us all and wants to be ignored,as if buried like a forgotten treasure.
There's always some clock, a despotic lord,who drowns us, then grabs us hard by the neckone day, and hangs us from a thick cord. [End Page 53]
Manuel Alcántara, born in Malaga in 1928, is a poet and newspaper columnist. Among his books are Manera de silencio, El embarcadero, Plaza Mayor, Ciudad de entonces, Anochecer privado, Sur, paredón y después, Este verano en Malaga, and Travesía (Antología poética, 1955-2004). His newspaper columns have been published in four collections: Los otros días, Fondo perdido, Vuelta de hoja, and Málaga nuestra. As a poet he has been distinguished with the National Literature Prize, among other awards. As a columnist he has received the three principal awards of Spanish journalism: the Luca de Tena Prize, the Mariano de Cavia Prize and the César González-Ruano Prize He has been awarded an honorary degree from the Universidad de Málaga, is a Favorite Son of Malaga, and has received the Medal of Andalusia.

Hasta el momento se han publicado cuatro recopilaciones de sus artículos periodísticos: Los otros días, Fondo perdido, Vuelta de hoja y Málaga nuestra. Como poeta ha sido distinguido con el Premio Nacional de Literatura, entre otros galardones. Como articulista ha recibido los tres máximos reconocimientos del periodismo español: el Premio Luca de Tena, el Premio Mariano de Cavia y el Premio César González-Ruano. Es Doctor Honoris Causa por la Universidad de Málaga, Hijo predilecto de Málaga y Medalla de Andalucía.
