[End Page 46]

  • The Wine of the Dead
  • Manuel Alcántara (bio)
Translated by Mark C. Aldrich (bio)

I remember the future. Nothing's new. It's an old story that will come my way;death sets out from memory, so they say.Life will be buried, covered by morning dew,

and a bird will fly. (Who knows if it's true?)Nothing else matters, it's the price you pay;Nothing advances, wheels spin in disarray.Death our fate, none other, this is our due.

The wine of the dead is silent and cursedyet every day my fill of it I drink,as if in a desert with unsated thirst.

"End up where you started," one of them said:Is this life? I don't know what to think, this death is really going to my head. [End Page 47]
