Ocurre que el olvido antes de serlofue grande amor, dorado cataclismo;muchacha en el umbral de mi egoísmo,¿qué va a pasar? Mejor es no saberlo.
Muchacha con amor, ¿dónde ponerlo?Amar son cercanías de uno mismo.Como siempre, rodando en el abismo,se irá el amor sin verlo ni beberlo.
Tumbarse a ver qué pasa, eso es lo mío;cumpliendo años irás en mi memoria,viviendo para ayer como una brasa,
porque no llegará la sangre al río,porque un día seremos sólo historiay lo de uno es tumbarse a ver qué pasa. [End Page 44]

They say that oblivion, before being so,was a great love, a golden disaster;this girl, of my ego nearly master...What's going to happen? Better not to know.
A girl with love, where should I put her?The suburbs of one 's self, love 's always near.It's close to the abyss but without fear;Love will go away, unseen and unstirred.
Lie back and see what happens, that's for me;I'll remember you as a mystery,Like embers, burn with yesterdays within,
since blood will not reach the open seasince one day we will be just history,that's what I'll do: lie back, see what happens. [End Page 44.]
Manuel Alcántara, born in Malaga in 1928, is a poet and newspaper columnist. Among his books are Manera de silencio, El embarcadero, Plaza Mayor, Ciudad de entonces, Anochecer privado, Sur, paredón y después, Este verano en Malaga, and Travesía (Antología poética, 1955-2004). His newspaper columns have been published in four collections: Los otros días, Fondo perdido, Vuelta de hoja, and Málaga nuestra. As a poet he has been distinguished with the National Literature Prize, among other awards. As a columnist he has received the three principal awards of Spanish journalism: the Luca de Tena Prize, the Mariano de Cavia Prize and the César González-Ruano Prize He has been awarded an honorary degree from the Universidad de Málaga, is a Favorite Son of Malaga, and has received the Medal of Andalusia.

Hasta el momento se han publicado cuatro recopilaciones de sus artículos periodísticos: Los otros días, Fondo perdido, Vuelta de hoja y Málaga nuestra. Como poeta ha sido distinguido con el Premio Nacional de Literatura, entre otros galardones. Como articulista ha recibido los tres máximos reconocimientos del periodismo español: el Premio Luca de Tena, el Premio Mariano de Cavia y el Premio César González-Ruano. Es Doctor Honoris Causa por la Universidad de Málaga, Hijo predilecto de Málaga y Medalla de Andalucía.
