135 NKWS FROM THE FIRST HISTORICAL ARCHIVES, BEIJING Philip A. Kuhn (Harvard University) The courtesy accorded foreign researchers by the staff of the First Historical Archives is a model of international cooperation. Despite the fact that the stacks are being rebuilt and masses of documents relocated, every effort has been made to furnish scholars the materials they need. Catalogues are made available upon request. Microfilm is still expensive, by international standards, at 40 fen (RMB) per frame. The new stacks are atmospherically controlled, beautifully lighted and, at basement level, equipped with compact (moveable) shelving. The vault we saw would be the envy of any library in the world. Excellent research conditions and generous cooperation are not the only reasons for which the scholarly community will thank the First. A vigorous program of editing and publication is about to overwhelm us with documents. Mr. Chu Chin-fu, ViceDirector of the Publications Department (pien-chi-pu) , told my colleagues, Kent Guy and Peter Perdue, and me of the following plans : 136 I. Sixteen publication projects are underway as part of the Archives' contribution to the Sixth Five-Year Plan. Unless otherwise noted, these will be typeset editions. 1.
