Editors' Note

With this issue, Dr. Randall Packard, William H. Welch Professor of the History of Medicine and Director of the Institute of the History of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University, joins Drs. Brieger and Bylebyl as an editor of the Bulletin. Dr. Packard's research interests are in the history of health, healing, and disease in Africa, and in the history of international public health. He is one of a growing number of historians working on the history of medicine in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The Bulletin's editors hope to increase the number of articles and reviews by scholars working in these areas in future issues of the Bulletin.

Beginning with this issue, the editors will open the "Notes and Comments" section to responses to articles. This idea is based on discussions with the Bulletin's Editorial Board, and is intended to add to the journal's scholarly and pedagogical value.

Please note that we've decided not to publish responses to book reviews. The editors hope to receive letters and essays that address general issues in the history of medicine, using a particular article as a springboard. In some cases we will send the remarks to the author of the article, and print both the response and the reply. Decisions about which communications to publish will be made on a case-by-case basis.

The editors look forward to hearing from the Bulletin's readers.

The editors welcome this year's new members of the Bulletin's Advisory Editorial Board: Howard Kushner, Ann LaBerge, James Mohr, and Karen Reeds. We're looking forward to working with them over the next three years. To departing board members Rima Apple, Richard Meckel, Edward Morman, and Arleen Tuchman the editors send thanks, for their help and advice..
