Abstract

Published approximately the same time as Tom's Midnight Garden, The Children of Green Knowe both now regarded as classic children's fantasy, Tony and the Wonderful Door has been forgotten. Tal examines the possible reasons for this. Remarkably, this book is set in America and Tony enters the world of New Amsterdam complete with native Americans. Like other time slip fantasies, the door operates at its own unpredictable will and in the end, it is closed to him leaving him, however, with the resources of the Museum of American Indians.
