EL MENTIDERO DE COMEDIANTES The Primer Congreso Internacional sobre Cervantes was held in Madrid, July 3-9, 1978. The theatre of Cervantes, especiallyLa Numancia anc Pedro de Urdemalas, was the object of several papers by scholars from the U.S.; among those presenting papers were Darío Fernández Morera, Fernando García Salinero, Carroll B. Johnson, Patricia Kenworthy, Adrienne Mandel, Edward Nagy, and Matthew D. Stroud. Professor Donald E. Schmiedel of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, will chair an Interest Session at the August meeting of the AATSP in Toronto. The topic for the Session is «The Woman's Role in the Comedia. » Participants and their topics are as follows: Vern G. Williamsen (Univ. ofMissouri, Columbia), «Mother Gets Her Man»; Frances Exum (Winthrop College),«The Pursuit of the Happy Ending by Moreto's Comic Heroines Ana, Cecilia and Diana»; Patricia Kenworthy (Vassar College), «The Deceitful Adultress of Cervantes'El viejo celoso«; Matthew D. Stroud (Trinity Univ.), «Woman as Victim: The Murder of Innocent Wives»; Armand Singer (West Virginia Univ.), «Don Juan's Women in El burlador de Sevilla»; F. W. Forbes (Univ. of New Hampshire), «Authorial Androgyny and the Woman as Hero.» The Department of Romance and Germanic Languages and Literatures of Wayne State University sponsored a lecture by Professor Jack H. Parker (Univ. of Toronto) on October 9, 1978, to honor the memory of Professor Benjamin B. Ashcom. Dr. Ashcom, who died in January of 1978, retired in 1973 after 44 years on the faculty at Wayne State. Professor Ashcom's personal library has been donated to Wayne State University by his family. The title of Professor Parker's talk was «The Seventeenth Century Spanish Comedia: Living Theater. » Professor José A. Madrigal (Auburn Univ.) will chair, and Professor Robert Fiore (Michigan State Univ.) will moderate, a Special Seminar on the Spanish Mythological drama at the 28th annual Mountain Interstate Foreign Language Conference to be held during the first week of October at West Virginia State College, Institute, West Virginia.
