126Quaker history Virginia" by James P. Bell. This work is an excellent supplement to materials found in W. W. Hinshaw's Virginia volume (no. VI) of the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy. An article entitled "The First Quakers - A Study in the Sociology of Religious Persecution" has been published in the June 1977 issue of The Journal of Religious History. The author is Alan B. Anderson, Lecturer in Sociology in the Preston Polytechnic, Preston, England. HISTORICAL NEWS A large number of Friends gathered in the old meeting house in Burlington, New Jersey on May 15, 1977, for the Spring meeting of the Friends Historical Association. After participating in the meeting for worship with Burlington Friends, they enjoyed a picnic lunch and visited places of historic interest such as the Burlington County Historical Society and the archives of die Proprietors of West Jersey. At the afternoon session Edwin B. Bronner gave an address describing the early Quaker settlements of West Jersey whose tercentenary we are now celebrating. A photograph of diis meeting appears elsewhere in this issue. The General Index to Quaker History, Volumes 61-65 (1972-1976) has been prepared by Sylvia T. Bronner and is now ready for distribution. It has already been sent to libraries on our subscription list. Members of the Friends Historical Association who wish to receive a copy gratis should write to the Association, % Quaker Collection, Haverford College Library, Haverford , Pa. 19041. Applications are being received for the T. Wistar Brown Fellowship at Haverford College for the academic year 1978-79. Fellows spend a minimum of nine months at Haverford College doing research in the Quaker Collection of the Library and in nearby scholarly collections. The Fellowship is usually awarded to post-doctoral scholars and die stipend is $7,000.
