FORUM THE FIRST EDITION OF ANTONIO DE SOLIS' TRIUNFOS DE AMOR Y FORTUNA HAROLD JONES University of Houston The first edition of Antonio de Solís' Triunfos de amor yfortuna may survive in only two or three copies, including one preserved in the Vatican Library, in the introduction to my catalog of the Hispanic books in the Barberini Collection I noted the rarity of this copy/ In the body of the catalog it is described thus:«SOLIS Y RIVADENEIRA, ANTONIO DE. Triunfos de amor y fortuna, n.p., n.d. /1658?/. 4° (Palau, 21, p. 464: 318599). Stamp. Barb. KKK. VII. 34.»' Professor Karl C. Gregg, who recently reviewed the catalog in BCom, wondered:«. . .If this might be desglosada from the volume of Solis's comedias (Madrid: Melchor Alvarez for Justo Antonio de Logroño, 1681, Sig. A-H2, fols. 1-27). The 1658? dating would be explained by the heading (fol. 27?) for the following entremesesy saínetes (fols. 27y-35y) which refers to a 1658 performance in the Coliseo of the Buen Retiro. If 117 118Bulletin ofthe Comediantes so, the Barberini item may not be so rare: I think there are at least five other copies elsewhere.»3 Professor Gregg may not have had the opportunity to consult the reference I provided. Palau's annotation shows that the edition in question is not an extract dating from 1681, but is rather the first edition of the comedia and the accompanying loa and entremeses. This edition would date from 1658, when the play was performed to commemorate the birth of Felipe Próspero. The fine printing, careful editing, large type and central column format would only be justifiable at that moment. Nac. Madrid. 2000 pts. Bardón 1949. »'/Note: the complete edition consists of 131 leaves/. Considering the rarity and probable textual importance of this edition , I would like to offer a more complete bibliographical description here, based on the Vatican Library copy. /Frontispiece:; TRIVNFOS / DE AMOR Y FORTVNA.
