Abstract

This essay takes as its subject the life and ideas of social reformer, journalist, and occultist Albert E.S. Smythe. Placing him within the milieu of turn-of-the-century Toronto, the essay examines the evolution of his ideas on social reform, just war, and pacifism. Smythe's work is also situated within the larger sweep of Canadian social amelioration and occult movements.

Le présent article traite de la vie et de l'idéologie du réformiste social, journaliste et occultiste Albert E.S. Smythe en examinant l'évolution de ses idées sur la réforme sociale, la guerre juste et le pacifisme à Toronto au tournant du siècle, dans le contexte de l'amélioration sociale et des mouvements occultes de cette période au Canada.
