Abstract

The second edition of The Physician of His Honour / El médico de su honra (Aris & Phillips) extensively revises the translation, simplifying the English. The introduction and notes are updated, reflecting advances in scholarship during the last ten years and the evolution in the translator's understanding of the comedia. Gutierre's peculiarities of expression are especially notable, as are other characters' reactions to and commentaries on his verbal eruptions. In the classroom, a close and student-centered reading allows each to "produce" her or his own text. Attention to performance helps the reader inhabit the sensibilities of the characters, encouraging recognition of one's self in the other. (DF)
