EL MENTIDERO DE COMEDIANTES An International Interdisciplinary Conference on the Theatre is planned at the University of Calgary, Canada, from 15-18 October 1987. Under the heading of «Parallel Lives: English and Spanish National Drama, 1580-1680», it focusses on the surprising parallels in development between the Spanish and English stage. The principal organizers are Louise Fothergill-Payne (Spanish) and James Black (English) aided by José Ruano de la Haza and Donald Beecher in Ottawa . Among the topics discussed are: Stagecraft (John Allen, John Orrell, John Varey), themes (Frederick de Armas, Susan Fischer, Teresa Kirschner, Isaac Rubio, Dawn Smith), Love (Cynthia Badendyck , Donald Beecher, Alexander Legatt, Henry Sullivan), Reception (Donald Cruickshank, Charles Ganelin, Eleonore Lieblein, José Ruano de la Haza), Corpus Christi Plays (Donald Dietz, Pedro León) and Aesthetics (Reginald Ingrarn, Sebastian Neumeister). Preceding the Conference there will be a one-day Symposium on «Translating the Theatrical Experience» at which Victor Dixon, Michael McGaha, Nick Round and Vern Williamsen will compare notes with members of the University of Calgary's Classics, French and German Departments. Kenneth Muir will open the Conference with a Plenary Session on Wednesday evening 14th October 1987.
