A questionnaire was sent to 50 residential schools for the deaf in order to generate data regarding the role and function of the counselor in this setting. Results indicate that counselors most often work with adolescents, spend most of their time in individual counseling, and focus most on behavioral problems. Sixty percent of the counselors received formal training in counseling whereas less than 30% were trained specifically as counselors with the hearing impaired. Counselors found the most fulfilling aspects of their work to be the interaction with students and their families whereas the great amount of paper work and large case loads were cited as the least fulfilling aspects of the job.
