This essay explores the connection between Roth's frequently anthologized short story, "Defender of the Faith," and the symbolism of Passover. It argues that Roth consciously uses Jewish texts, specifically the Haggadah's parable of the four sons, to complicate readers' notions of post-Holocaust American Jewish identity.
