Abstract

During the last 3 years, deaf children have been receiving cochlear implants. While presently less than 100 children have them, children with implants will soon number in the hundreds, presenting some unique problems to educators. The implant's effects on speech discrimination, lipreading, and auditory contact are reviewed. This review highlights unresolved questions and presents well-established conclusions. The potential risks and benefits are considered. Future development of the cochlear implant should include educators of deaf children.
