Abstract

The course, Psycho-Social Aspects of Deafness, has frequently been offered to hearing students in programs focusing on education, counseling, or social work with the deaf. At the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, it is offered to hearing-impaired students at the undergraduate level. The focus and goals of the course for hearing-impaired students are to enhance their understanding of the impact of deafness on their educational, psychological, emotional, and social development. The focus of this course is not only directed to the cognitive domain, but to the affective domain in terms of the expression and understanding of feelings, attitudes, and values associated with the impact of deafness on the lives of deaf students and significant others within their social milieu.
